Tesla has won a bid to revive its UK lawsuit concerning 5G patent licensing terms, reopening a significant legal battle over the cost of using wireless technology in connected vehicles.

The electric carmaker originally filed the case in London’s High Court in 2023 against InterDigital and Avanci, challenging the licensing framework used for automotive 5G patents. Tesla argues that the terms offered were not fair or reasonable for vehicle manufacturers.

The latest ruling allows the case to move forward, marking an important development in the broader global dispute over how standard-essential patents should be licensed to the automotive industry as connected and autonomous vehicle technologies continue to expand.
