BUENOS AIRES: Lionel Messi will make history after being named in Argentina’s squad for the FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Argentine player to feature in six World Cup tournaments.The 38-year-old captain is set to lead the defending champions as they aim to retain the trophy they won in Qatar in 2022.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni has largely kept faith in the team that delivered Argentina’s third World Cup title. Seventeen players from the victorious 2022 squad have been selected once again.Key stars returning for the tournament include Emiliano Martinez, Nicolas Otamendi, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez.One notable absence is Angel Di Maria, who retired from international football after helping Argentina win the 2024 Copa America.
