Brazil came from behind to defeat Japan 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring the winner in the 95th minute.
Japan shocked the five-time champions when Kaishu Sano fired them ahead in the first half. Brazil responded after the break as Casemiro headed home the equaliser from a Gabriel Magalhaes cross.
With extra time looming, Bruno Guimaraes set up Martinelli, who calmly finished from close range to seal Brazil’s dramatic victory. The goal was the latest winning strike in normal time of a World Cup knockout match since 1966.
Brazil will face Norway or Ivory Coast in the Round of 16, while Japan’s hopes of a first-ever World Cup knockout victory came to an end.
