Harry Brook and Jordan Cox starred with the bat as England strengthened their grip on the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley, reaching 366-8 by stumps on day two for a 195-run first-innings lead.
Brook played an aggressive knock of 91 from 93 balls, smashing 13 fours before Pakistan spinner Ali Usman dismissed him just nine runs short of a century. Brook had earlier been dropped, but made Pakistan pay with a commanding innings.
Jordan Cox also impressed on his Test return, scoring 73, while Joe Root made 66 and Dan Lawrence added 51. Their contributions helped England build a substantial advantage despite rain interrupting play.
Pakistan’s main success came through left-arm spinner Ali Usman, who claimed his maiden Test five-wicket haul. He finished the day with figures of 5-92 after breaking several important partnerships.
England will resume on 366-8 with Jamie Smith unbeaten on 16, holding a commanding position as Pakistan look to take the remaining two wickets quickly.
