Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan has criticised Israel’s latest strike on Syria, calling it a “provocative and dangerous” move that could further damage relations with Washington.
Golan, leader of Israel’s Democrats party, accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of using military force for political purposes rather than genuine national security interests.
The criticism follows Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria on August 18. Israel said the attack was aimed at preventing a potential Turkish military deployment at the site, while Syria and Turkey rejected the justification.
Golan warned that the strike could also push Israel towards a confrontation with Türkiye and erode trust among its allies. The US has described the Israeli action as an unnecessary escalation and is seeking to encourage dialogue between Israel, Syria and Türkiye.
The latest dispute adds to growing tensions over Israel’s military activity in Syria and comes as Washington attempts to prevent further regional escalation.
