The federal cabinet has approved the draft Defence Forces Act 2026 and amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, paving the way for the proposed legislation to be presented before Parliament.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved the Defence Forces Act as a follow-up to changes introduced through the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The proposed law seeks to establish the legal and administrative framework governing the office of the Chief of Defence Forces and the Chief of Defence Forces Headquarters.
The cabinet also approved amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, which officials said are necessary to bring the law in line with the revised defence command structure.
Both draft bills are expected to be presented in Parliament for consideration and approval during its ongoing session.
