US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a career-low 33%, with voter frustration over the economy and his handling of the Iran war creating growing political risks for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 71% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, while rising inflation and fuel prices have added to concerns about the cost of living. The war has disrupted global oil trade and contributed to higher energy costs.

The poll also showed Democrats gaining ground on the economy. For the first time in about a decade, more voters said Democrats would do a better job handling economic issues than Republicans, with 38% favouring Democrats compared with 35% for the GOP.

Democrats also appear more energised heading into the November elections, with 46% of Democratic voters describing themselves as very enthusiastic about voting, compared with 31% of Republicans.

The figures could spell trouble for the Republican Party as voters prepare to decide control of Congress, with Trump’s economic record and the continuing Iran conflict likely to remain central issues on the campaign trail.
