Iran has vowed a “devastating” response as the United States threatens to impose its toughest-ever economic measures against Tehran and pressures other countries to isolate the Iranian economy.
Washington has stepped up its campaign to cut Iran off financially, warning governments and businesses that continued economic ties with Tehran could carry severe consequences.
Iran has rejected the threats and warned that any further US action would trigger a strong response, raising fears of an escalation in the ongoing confrontation.
China has meanwhile criticised Washington’s use of sanctions and economic pressure, saying such measures cannot resolve the conflict. Beijing has called for dialogue and diplomacy instead as tensions between the US and Iran continue to rise.
