England Test captain Ben Stokes is facing uncertainty over his leadership role after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) launched an investigation into a nightclub incident.
The probe also includes England fast bowler Gus Atkinson and relates to events following England’s victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s.
According to the ECB, the players were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday when an incident occurred that is now under review for potential breaches of team protocols.
Officials said they are gathering further information before deciding on any disciplinary action or changes to the squad for the second Test.
Reports in British media suggest players from English rugby club Saracens were also present at the venue during a separate end-of-season gathering.
Saracens confirmed that one of their academy players was involved in an incident and said the matter is being reviewed.
The situation comes amid ongoing scrutiny of England’s team culture following previous off-field controversies during recent international tours.
If Stokes is removed as captain, white-ball skipper Harry Brook could be considered as a replacement for upcoming matches.
The ECB is expected to announce further updates once its investigation is complete.
