Australia has announced an additional $3.2 billion investment in its nuclear-powered submarine programme, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the AUKUS security partnership with the United States and the United Kingdom.
The new funding will support the development of Australia’s submarine capability, including infrastructure, workforce training and industrial capacity needed to operate and maintain the advanced fleet.
Under the AUKUS agreement, Australia and Britain are expected to jointly build a new class of nuclear-powered submarines in the 2040s, replacing existing fleets with next-generation vessels designed to enhance regional security.
Australian officials say the investment reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening defence capabilities and maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific amid evolving strategic challenges.
