Austria began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Jordan in a Group J clash, securing their first World Cup victory in 36 years.
Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead in the first half, but Jordan responded after the break through Ali Olwan, who scored his country’s first-ever World Cup goal.
The match turned in Austria’s favour when Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab scored an own goal in the 76th minute. Veteran striker Marko Arnautovic then sealed the result with a stoppage-time penalty.
The victory gives Austria an important three points in the race for the knockout stage, while Jordan earned praise for a spirited performance in their historic World Cup debut.
