NASA has successfully tested a powerful new electric thruster that could help future human missions reach Mars faster and more efficiently than with conventional chemical rocket technology.

The system is based on electric propulsion, which accelerates charged particles using electrical energy rather than relying solely on the rapid combustion used by traditional rocket engines.

According to NASA researchers, the technology could achieve 70-90% better propellant efficiency compared with high-thrust chemical rockets, allowing spacecraft to carry less fuel and potentially more cargo for long-duration missions.

While electric thrusters produce much lower thrust than conventional rockets, they can operate continuously for extended periods, gradually building up extremely high speeds over time. This makes them especially attractive for deep-space missions, where efficiency is often more important than rapid acceleration.

NASA says the latest tests are part of ongoing efforts to develop propulsion systems capable of supporting crewed missions to Mars and other destinations beyond Earth orbit, with future work focusing on increasing power output, durability and integration with next-generation spacecraft.
