Vast Astronaut Mission Signals Start of Commercial Space Station Race

Private companies accelerate plans to replace the International Space Station by 2030

The race to build the world’s first commercial space station is intensifying after US company Vast announced plans to send an astronaut to its upcoming Haven-1 station as early as next year.

If launched as scheduled in early 2027, Haven-1 would become the first privately operated space station, marking a shift toward commercial human spaceflight as the International Space Station (ISS) approaches retirement in 2030.

The ISS, which has been continuously inhabited for more than 25 years, is set to be deorbited at the end of the decade, opening the door for private sector replacements.

Vast CEO Max Haot said the mission represents a new era of space exploration that is “less expensive and less reliant on Russia,” highlighting growing efforts by Western countries to reduce dependence on Russian launch systems following the war in Ukraine.

French astronaut Arnaud Prost is expected to join the inaugural mission, where he will conduct system tests ahead of scientific research activities.

Haven-1 will be a single-module station designed for short-duration missions of about two weeks, in contrast to the multi-module structure of the ISS.

Vast plans to expand the concept with its future Haven-2 station, which could include multiple modules and support longer missions by 2030.

Other companies, including Axiom Space and Blue Origin, are also developing commercial space stations as competition in low-Earth orbit accelerates.

All missions will rely on SpaceX Falcon 9 and the SpaceX Dragon 2 for transportation, underscoring SpaceX’s dominant role in current crewed spaceflight.

Analysts say the growing number of private projects signals a major transition from government-led space stations to commercially operated platforms over the next decade.
