One in five children across 21 countries has experienced technology-facilitated sexual abuse, according to a new UNICEF report highlighting the growing risks young people face online.

The report found that more than half of the reported cases occurred on mainstream social media platforms, underscoring concerns about the safety of children in widely used digital spaces.

UNICEF said the findings reflect the increasing role of technology in enabling exploitation and called for stronger safeguards to protect children online.

The agency urged governments, technology companies and communities to strengthen child protection measures, improve reporting systems and enhance online safety as children spend more time in digital environments.
