England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been left out of the squad for the second Test against New Zealand after an alleged breach of team curfew.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that both players are unavailable for selection while an investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Former England skipper Joe Root will take charge of the team as interim captain for the match at the Oval, which starts on June 17.
The investigation follows a nightclub incident that occurred after England’s 115-run victory in the first Test at Lord’s. Reports indicate the incident involved a confrontation with Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa, during which an ECB security staff member was reportedly struck.
The controversy is the latest off-field issue involving the England camp, which has previously faced criticism over player discipline and drinking culture.
Meanwhile, fast bowler Jofra Archer and batter Jordan Cox have been called up to strengthen the squad for the second Test.
