Spain’s FIFA World Cup-winning squad received a royal welcome on Monday as King Felipe VI praised the team’s determination and unity after their triumph in the United States.
The king, joined by Queen Letizia and the royal family, welcomed captain Rodri, coach Luis de la Fuente and the players at Zarzuela Palace before they headed to Madrid for a victory parade expected to attract around one million fans.
“You have shown your grit, resilience and courage,” Felipe told the squad, adding they remained united throughout their World Cup journey.
Spain secured their second World Cup title with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, thanks to Ferran Torres’ winner. The celebrations also marked a historic milestone, with Spain becoming the first country to hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup trophies at the same time after the women’s triumph in 2023.
The team is set to meet Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez before travelling through Madrid on an open-top bus, where thousands of fans have already gathered to celebrate the historic achievement.
