Argentina topped Group J behind Lionel Messi’s goals before surviving dramatic knockout ties against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England. The defending champions have repeatedly fought back from difficult positions to reach a second straight final.
The teams have met 14 times, with six wins each and two draws. Their only previous World Cup meeting came in 1966, when Argentina defeated Spain 2-1 in the group stage.
Victory for Argentina would make them the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup. Spain, meanwhile, are one win away from claiming only the second world title in their history.
