Scientists outline chilling Sizewell nuclear plant wildfire scenarios

Experts say smoke infiltration, not reactor damage, could become the biggest operational concern if flames move closer to Sizewell B.

Firefighters are battling a major wildfire near the Sizewell nuclear power station in Suffolk. The blaze is burning across Dunwich Heath and remains one of the toughest incidents faced by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service.

More than 100 firefighters and 18 fire engines have been deployed. Officials expect the fire to continue burning for up to two days.

Sizewell B is located about five miles from the wildfire. EDF and local fire authorities say the fire and smoke are not affecting plant operations. Current wind conditions are pushing the smoke away from the site.

Weather forecasts suggest the wind could later turn north. This change could bring the fire closer to Sizewell B and the planned Sizewell C site if the blaze is not fully contained.

Scientists consulted by the Science Media Centre say the reactors are not defenseless against wildfires. The plant sits on an industrial site surrounded by roads that can act as fire breaks.

Experts also note that Sizewell B was designed to withstand several hazards, including fires. The plant received its latest fire safety inspection from the Office for Nuclear Regulation in March 2024.

One nuclear engineer said the main concern would likely be smoke entering the plant’s air filtration systems. Clogged filters could affect cooling and support systems around the reactor.

Such a situation would not be expected to damage the reactor directly. However, operators might temporarily shut down electricity production until conditions become safe for staff to return.

EDF says it is continuously monitoring the wildfire and remains in close contact with emergency services as the situation develops.
