More than 43,000 people have been evacuated as fast-moving wildfires continue to tear through one of France’s most popular tourist destinations. Emergency services are battling the blazes amid extreme heat and dry conditions.
Authorities ordered the full evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, urging residents and tourists to leave the area immediately as flames advanced and conditions deteriorated.
The European Union has activated its Civil Protection Mechanism to support France’s firefighting efforts, enabling additional resources and assistance from member states as crews work to contain the fires.
The wildfires are part of a broader wave of extreme weather affecting Europe, where prolonged heat and drought have increased the risk of destructive blazes, forcing mass evacuations and threatening homes, businesses and natural landscapes.
