A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan, causing power outages, transport disruptions and damage in affected areas as emergency teams began assessing the situation.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said injuries had been reported and authorities were working to determine the full extent of the impact. Officials also warned residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
The quake disrupted rail services, including high-speed trains, while thousands of homes lost electricity. Emergency crews were deployed to inspect damaged buildings, roads and other infrastructure.
