Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated on Wednesday after the US military disabled an oil tanker near Qeshm Island, prompting a new wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks on US-linked targets in the Gulf.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the Botswana-flagged tanker M/T Lexie was struck after allegedly ignoring repeated warnings and attempting to breach a US-imposed blockade.
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched missile and drone attacks targeting US assets in Bahrain and Kuwait. US officials said the attacks were intercepted or failed to reach their targets.
The latest exchange comes despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which began in February. While both sides have spoken of a possible agreement, negotiations remain stalled and no formal deal has been reached.
Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high as Israel continues military operations in southern Lebanon despite a US-mediated partial ceasefire announced earlier this week
