An Indian court has sentenced former magazine editor Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison in a rape case that has drawn national attention for more than a decade.
According to a police investigator involved in the case, Tejpal has been given two weeks to surrender before authorities begin the process of taking him into custody.
The court also ordered him to pay a fine of about $5,250, in addition to the prison sentence.
The case stems from allegations made by a former colleague and has remained one of the most closely watched sexual assault cases involving a prominent figure in India’s media industry.
Tejpal had previously been acquitted by a lower court, but the conviction was later overturned on appeal, leading to the latest sentencing order. The decision is expected to be challenged through further legal proceedings.
