Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan to immediately release detained United Nations and non-governmental organisation staff, expressing concern over a growing crackdown on humanitarian and civil society workers.
HRW said that six male employees of the Women and Children Legal Research Foundation (WCLRF) were forcibly disappeared from the organisation’s office in Kabul, and that their whereabouts remain unknown.
The rights group called on Taliban authorities to disclose the men’s location, ensure their safety and allow them access to their families and legal representation.
HRW warned that the disappearance of humanitarian and rights workers could further undermine the operating environment for UN agencies, aid organisations and civil society groups working in Afghanistan.
The Taliban have not yet publicly responded to HRW’s latest allegations.
