Google Maps will display “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario” in the United States, following President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the lake.
The change comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Ottawa, including a broader trade dispute between the two countries.
Google said users in the US will see the updated name, while people outside the country will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” reflecting regional naming practices.
The unusual naming change has drawn attention internationally, with the lake’s traditional name remaining widely recognised in Canada and around the world.
