The federal government will fully fund a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Tuesday.
Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister directed officials to speed up work and ensure timely completion of the project.
He also ordered third-party validation at all stages to ensure transparency in implementation.
Officials said an 18MW solar project for government buildings is already underway across the region.
Solarisation of public buildings in Gilgit and Diamer divisions is expected to be completed by December 2026, while Baltistan will be finished by October 2026.
Work is also in progress on an 82MW solar initiative aimed at providing electricity to households in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas and Khaplu.
The meeting was attended by senior ministers including Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Awais Leghari and Amir Muqam.
The prime minister also highlighted Pakistan’s broader commitment to tackling climate change, land degradation and drought through restoration and sustainable land use policies.
He urged coordinated action across federal and provincial governments to strengthen climate resilience and protect natural resources.
