Apple is reportedly testing memory chips produced by China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) for possible use in future iPhones and MacBooks, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The evaluation is said to be part of Apple’s broader effort to diversify its supply chain and reduce risks linked to tightening global memory supplies, which have been strained by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure and data-centre demand.
AI-related computing systems require large amounts of DRAM and other memory components, contributing to industry-wide shortages and increasing competition for advanced semiconductor supplies.
The report said Apple has not made a final decision on whether CXMT chips will be used in commercial products, and the testing process does not guarantee future adoption.
If confirmed, the move would mark a notable development in Apple’s component sourcing strategy and could provide CXMT with a significant boost as China seeks to strengthen its domestic semiconductor capabilities amid ongoing global technology competition.
