British Columbia has announced plans to file a lawsuit against OpenAI over its handling of violent activity linked to a school shooting.

The province alleges the company failed to alert law enforcement about violent ChatGPT prompts connected to the suspect before the attack in Tumbler Ridge.

Families affected by the February shooting have already filed legal action against OpenAI in California.

Provincial officials said any recovered funds would support community rebuilding efforts, including a new school in Tumbler Ridge.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously apologised, saying the company regretted not notifying authorities about the banned account.
