Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations are meeting in France’s Evian-les-Bains resort amid rising diplomatic tensions, with US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and questions over Washington’s global role setting the tone for the summit.
The three-day gathering will focus on major international issues, including the newly announced US–Iran framework agreement, the war in Ukraine, global economic imbalances, and efforts to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals.
Trump’s warning of possible 100% tariffs on French wine over digital taxes has added friction ahead of discussions, further straining relations between the United States and its allies.
The summit also comes as European leaders consider next steps following the Iran–US memorandum of understanding, which includes plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and negotiate a broader settlement.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to meet Trump during the summit as Kyiv seeks continued military support amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron, hosting what is likely his final G7 summit as president, is aiming to use the meeting to push coordinated action on global economic issues and strengthen multilateral cooperation despite widening geopolitical divisions.
