A large anti-G7 protest in Geneva turned violent on Sunday after demonstrators set a Tesla vehicle on fire and smashed windows at a United Nations agency office during a march against global economic inequality and the upcoming G7 summit in France.
The protest, which initially began peacefully with around 20,000 participants, escalated as some groups targeted symbols of capitalism and international institutions. Police responded with tear gas as clashes broke out in parts of the city.
Authorities said protesters threw bricks and caused damage to property, while riot police were deployed across central Geneva amid heightened security concerns ahead of the summit in Evian-les-Bains.
Demonstrators said their actions were aimed at highlighting inequality, corporate power and global governance systems represented by the G7. Some participants criticised rising wealth concentration, pointing to billionaire Elon Musk’s recent financial milestone as an example of widening economic gaps.
Officials confirmed businesses in the city had been boarded up in anticipation of unrest, while security forces worked to contain the violence and disperse crowds.
