Pakistan steps up efforts for release of crew held hostage by Somali pirates

Pakistan has intensified diplomatic efforts to secure the safe release of 11 Pakistani crew members taken hostage after pirates seized an oil tanker near the coast of Somalia.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry contacted Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar as well as the Somali ambassador, seeking assistance for the safe recovery of the Pakistani sailors.

In a letter, the maritime minister expressed deep concern over the safety of the crew and assured that all possible measures were being taken to ensure their protection and secure their release.

The incident occurred last week when pirates attacked and hijacked an oil tanker carrying 11 Pakistani crew members near Somali waters. Since then, Pakistani authorities have been working closely with relevant international and regional stakeholders to address the situation.

Somali authorities have assured Pakistan that they will keep Islamabad informed of any developments regarding the vessel and its crew.

Earlier, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry had directed all relevant institutions to enhance the effectiveness of rescue and recovery efforts. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs said all concerned departments remain in constant coordination and are closely monitoring the situation.
