Meta Platforms has fixed a critical security vulnerability in its AI-powered support assistant after reports that hackers used it to take over premium Instagram accounts.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed that the issue has been resolved and affected accounts are being secured.
The flaw reportedly allowed attackers to manipulate the automated support system and change account recovery details without needing access to victims’ email or phone numbers.
Hackers allegedly used the system to trigger password resets and redirect verification codes, enabling full account takeover.
Several high-profile accounts were reportedly impacted, including inactive official pages and accounts linked to public figures and major brands.
Meta said it has strengthened its security protocols following the incident and is working to prevent similar exploitation in the future.
