LAHORE: Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has responded to concerns over the declining pace of the national team’s fast bowlers, saying heavy workloads and fatigue have played a major role.

Pakistan recently suffered a 2-0 Test series defeat against Bangladesh. During the series, the team’s pacers struggled to generate their usual speed, with most deliveries recorded in the mid-130kph range.

Addressing the issue, Shaheen compared fast bowlers to machines that require proper maintenance after continuous use.

“When a machine keeps running, it eventually needs maintenance. Some of our fast bowlers have played a lot of cricket, and rest is important to perform at full intensity,” he said.

The left-arm pacer stressed that Pakistan’s bowlers remain fully committed to representing the country and are working hard to improve their pace.

“We are all thinking about how to increase our speed again. The coaches and management are also working with us on this,” he added.

Shaheen then lightened the mood with a humorous response to a reporter’s question.

“If you are asking about me personally, I will try to bowl at 200kph for you,” he joked.

Speaking about the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, Shaheen said the training camp in Lahore had been highly beneficial. Around 28 to 29 players participated under the guidance of head coach Mike Hesson and the selection committee.

He said the camp was important because Pakistan had not played much ODI cricket recently.

“The practice sessions have been very good, and we are hopeful of delivering strong performances,” he said.

Shaheen also welcomed the return of Babar Azam to the ODI squad after he missed the Bangladesh series earlier this year.

Describing Babar as the backbone of Pakistan’s middle order, Shaheen praised his recent form in the Pakistan Super League and backed him to perform well against Australia.

“Babar has been an important player for us for many years. We hope his good form continues and helps Pakistan win matches,” he concluded.
