Manchester United’s Amad Diallo scored in the 90th minute as Ivory Coast stunned Ecuador 1-0 in their World Cup Group E opener in Mexico City.
The match looked set to end goalless, with Ecuador’s strong defence and Ivory Coast’s occasional threats cancelling each other out.
Ecuador hit the woodwork twice in the first half through John Yeboah and Alan Minda, while Ivory Coast also struck the bar after the break.
Just before injury time, Diallo arrived at the far post to finish first-time from Wilfried Singo’s low cross, sealing the win for the African champions.
It is Ivory Coast’s first World Cup victory in 12 years, boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
