Weather update: Karachi faces intense heatwave as experts advise precautionary steps

KARACHI: The city continues to endure an intense spell of hot and dry weather, with soaring temperatures and low humidity gripping the metropolis.

Amid the harsh conditions, medical experts have urged residents to take precautionary measures, warning that extreme heat combined with dry weather can lead to serious health complications if not managed properly.

Experts advise limiting outdoor activities, particularly during peak hours between 11am and 3pm, staying well-hydrated, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Residents have also been cautioned against consuming street food and unhygienic drinks, recommending boiled water to prevent stomach infections. Wearing light-coloured, loose clothing and covering the head while outdoors have also been strongly advised.

Hospitals across the city have reported a rise in respiratory illnesses. Pulmonary specialist Dr Javed Khan told Geo News that such cases have increased by around 20% due to the prevailing heat.

He explained that in hot and humid conditions, oxygen levels can feel lower, while asthma cases are on the rise in both public and private hospitals. The risk of pneumonia also increases during such weather, he added.

Dr Khan further recommended avoiding unnecessary sun exposure, spending time in shaded or cooler areas, and increasing greenery at home to help mitigate heat. He emphasized maintaining adequate hydration to prevent dehydration.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Karachi recorded a temperature of 41°C on Monday, with humidity dropping to as low as 8%. Hot and dry north-westerly winds were blowing at 11 km/h.

The Met Office has warned that temperatures may rise further to 42°C during the day, while the overnight minimum was recorded at 29°C, with winds continuing at around 8 km/h.
