The Punjab government has relaxed operating-hour restrictions for cinemas, allowing theatres to remain open until 11pm under a revised business schedule.

The decision has been welcomed by the film industry, particularly actor and producer Fahad Mustafa, who recently urged authorities to reconsider the earlier restrictions.

Under previous austerity measures, many cinemas located inside shopping malls were effectively forced to close by 8pm, reducing the number of daily screenings and impacting box-office revenue.

Following the announcement, Mustafa thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and encouraged audiences to watch his latest film, Zombeid, currently screening nationwide.

The actor had argued that evening shows are crucial for working families and moviegoers who cannot attend daytime screenings. He also highlighted the importance of extended hours for supporting local productions, cinema operators, and related businesses.

The issue gained attention during the Eid release season, when Zombeid competed with other films for audience share and screen time.

Under the revised framework, restaurants, cafes, cinemas, and entertainment venues can now operate until 11pm, while markets and shopping malls will close at 9pm.

Industry stakeholders view the move as a positive step that will help boost cinema attendance, improve box-office performance, and support the growth of Pakistan’s film sector.
