Justin Trudeau has responded to criticism after he skipped Canada’s World Cup opener to attend a separate match in the United States alongside Katy Perry.

Trudeau was seen at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, where he attended opening ceremony events and watched the US match against Paraguay with Perry.

Earlier the same day, Canada played its first World Cup match in Toronto, drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina to earn its first point of the tournament.

His absence from Canada’s game drew online criticism, with some questioning his decision to attend the US fixture instead.

Trudeau later addressed the backlash on X, though details of his statement were not fully disclosed in reports.

The appearance of Trudeau and Perry together also drew attention online, following public confirmation of their relationship last year.
