‘Project Freedom’: Trump pauses Hormuz escort initiative after requests from Pakistan and others

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has reportedly paused the “Project Freedom” initiative, which involved escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, following requests from Pakistan and other regional stakeholders.

According to reports, the decision comes amid diplomatic consultations over rising tensions in the region and concerns raised by multiple countries regarding further escalation in the strategic waterway.

The initiative had aimed to ensure safe passage for shipping through one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints.

Officials have not yet issued a detailed public explanation, but the move is being viewed as a temporary suspension pending further diplomatic engagement.

Pakistan is said to have been among the countries that urged restraint and encouraged a negotiated approach to maritime security in the region.
