Paul Rudd has sparked debate after criticising the requirement for passengers to switch phones to airplane mode during flights.

Appearing on the podcast Therapuss, Rudd dismissed several standard airline instructions, including seat positioning and tray table rules, saying he believed much of it was unnecessary.

He specifically called the airplane mode rule “nonsense,” adding that he did not see the need for it.

Rudd suggested the practice likely originated from concerns about possible interference with cockpit communications.

Aviation authorities, however, continue to require airplane mode to reduce any risk of signal disruption to aircraft systems and pilot communications.

The actor’s comments quickly drew attention online, with many users debating whether the rule is still relevant in modern aircraft technology.

The conversation also touched on passenger etiquette, including the habit of standing immediately after landing, which Rudd said he has no issue with.

Rudd is currently promoting his latest film Power Ballad, which premiered in theatres on May 29.
