Labor Day 2026 is set to bring a long holiday weekend for millions of Americans, with changes to store hours, government services and travel schedules across the country.

Many businesses and retailers will remain open, although some may operate with reduced or modified hours. Banks, government offices and other public services are expected to close for the federal holiday.

Travel is also expected to pick up as families use the long weekend for vacations and short trips. Major airports, highways and public transport networks could see heavier crowds and delays.

Labor Day has a long history in the United States. It was first observed as a state holiday in the late 19th century, and by 1894, 23 states had adopted it as an official holiday.
