Karachi braces for continued heat, but relief from heatwave conditions

KARACHI: The port city is expected to continue experiencing hot and humid weather over the coming days, with daytime temperatures likely to remain in the mid-30°C range, but there is no immediate threat of a heatwave, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Monday.

The Met Office said Karachi will remain under the influence of sea breezes, which will help keep conditions relatively stable despite rising temperatures in other parts of Sindh. The city’s temperature is expected to stay around 36–37°C in the coming days, with high humidity making conditions uncomfortable.

While Karachi is expected to be spared from extreme heat for now, meteorologists warned that a fresh heatwave spell is likely to affect several districts of Sindh from May 15, potentially lasting until May 20 or beyond.

According to PMD, most parts of Sindh will continue to experience hot to very hot and dry weather, with ongoing heatwave conditions persisting in central and upper regions of the province in the short term.

Extremely high temperatures between 46°C and 48°C are forecast for interior districts including Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Ghotki.

Similarly, intense heat conditions are expected to persist in Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana, and Sukkur, where residents are already facing prolonged hot spells.

The Met Office said the current heatwave in parts of Sindh may ease temporarily from Tuesday, but warned that another extended spell of high temperatures is likely mid-month.

Authorities have advised citizens, particularly children, women, and the elderly, to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, stay hydrated, and take precautionary measures during hot weather.

Farmers have also been urged to plan agricultural activities carefully and ensure proper care of livestock, while relevant departments have been directed to remain alert to prevent heat-related emergencies.
