Experts Predict Tactical Evolution and Set-Piece Focus at Upcoming World Cup

Coaches highlight rising intensity, set-piece importance, and climate challenges as modern systems reshape how major tournaments are won

Experts say international football is becoming more tactical and intense. But it is still hard to compare with elite club football. National teams work under very different conditions.

Former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh says coaches have limited time with players. They cannot build squads through transfers like club teams. He also notes that results in international tournaments carry more weight. That is because there are fewer matches.

Modern national teams now mirror club systems more closely. They use high pressing, quick transitions, and counter-attacking football. France coach Didier Deschamps says fast transitions often decide key moments in games.

However, Roxburgh warns that extreme heat in North America could change how teams play at the next World Cup. It may force sides to reduce high-intensity pressing, as conditions will make it harder to sustain.

He also expects set-pieces to become more important. Teams will focus more on corners, free-kicks, and long throws. FIFA’s planned hydration breaks could also shape matches. They will give coaches extra chances to adjust tactics during games.
