Earthquake of magnitude 5.7 jolts Islamabad, KP regions

An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck Islamabad, Peshawar and several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday, according to the Seismic Monitoring Centre.

Tremors were also felt in Swat, Nowshera, Shangla and Buner, with residents reporting shaking in both urban and rural areas.

The Seismic Monitoring Centre said the epicentre was located in the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border region, at a depth of around 170 kilometres.

No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage were received.

Pakistan lies on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it prone to frequent seismic activity. The country has experienced several significant earthquakes in recent years, including a 5.8-magnitude quake in February that affected Islamabad, Swat and Hunza.

The devastating 2005 earthquake in Azad Kashmir killed more than 73,000 people, while a 2021 quake in Harnai, Balochistan, caused multiple casualties and widespread disruption.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of preparedness due to the country’s earthquake-prone geography and challenging terrain, which often complicates rescue operations.
