British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to ban social media access for children under 16.
He said a “full ban is the right choice” as part of wider efforts to protect young people online.
The proposed rules will also include restrictions on gaming and livestreaming platforms.
The move is part of a broader push to tighten online safety laws and regulate big tech companies more strictly.
The UK government said growing evidence of mental health risks among children influenced the decision.
Officials also pointed to international examples, including Australia’s recent under-16 social media ban.
Public consultations showed strong parental support for stricter age limits on social media use.
However, some experts have raised concerns about whether such bans can be effectively enforced or will achieve intended results.
