Japan produced a spirited comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their World Cup Group F opener in Texas.
The Dutch took the lead early in the second half through Virgil van Dijk’s header. Japan responded seven minutes later when Keito Nakamura found the net from close range.
Crysencio Summerville restored the Netherlands’ advantage with a superb curling strike, putting his side 2-1 ahead.
Japan refused to give up and grabbed a late equaliser in the 88th minute. Daichi Kamada was credited with the goal after Koki Ogawa’s header deflected off him and beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The result was especially encouraging for Japan, who played without injured captain Wataru Endo.
Coach Hajime Moriyasu praised his team’s unity and composure, saying the players handled difficult situations well and stayed focused throughout the match.
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman expressed disappointment at his side’s failure to hold the lead twice but acknowledged Japan’s quality and determination.
The draw gives both teams an important point to start their Group F campaign.
