Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello has called on King Charles III to change the name of the OBE, arguing that retaining the word “Empire” is a mistake that should be corrected.

Costello, who received the honour in 2019 for his contributions to music, suggested replacing the word “Empire” with “Excellence.” He said such a change would make the award more acceptable in modern times while preserving its prestige.

Reflecting on his investiture, the musician described his visit to Buckingham Palace as an experience approached with curiosity, scepticism and cynicism. He also recalled discussing Irish politics with journalists after receiving the honour.

Costello noted that his parents encouraged him to attend the ceremony, despite their republican views, and said accepting the award allowed him to experience the institution firsthand.

The debate over British honours is not new. John Lennon returned his MBE in 1969 in protest, while George Harrison reportedly declined an OBE and David Bowie turned down a knighthood.

Costello ultimately accepted his honour, joking at the time that it confirmed his long-held suspicion that “nobody really listens to the words in songs.”
