Andrew Flintoff appointed as Sydney Thunder head coach on two-year deal

Former England cricket star Andrew Flintoff has been appointed head coach of Sydney Thunder, with the Big Bash League (BBL) franchise describing the move as the most significant off-field acquisition in the club’s history.

The 48-year-old has signed a two-year contract, marking his first coaching assignment outside England after weeks of speculation surrounding his future.

Flintoff, one of England’s most celebrated all-rounders, represented his country in all three formats and played a key role in England’s historic Ashes triumph in 2005. He was also linked with the England head coach position last year before the role remained with Brendon McCullum.

In recent years, Flintoff has gained coaching experience with the England Lions and Northern Superchargers in The Hundred competition. His appointment comes after Sydney Thunder parted ways with Trevor Bayliss, who stepped down in February following six seasons in charge.

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Flintoff said he sees great potential in the Thunder squad and is eager to help the team progress.

“I can’t wait to get over there and get started,” Flintoff said in a statement. “I’m looking at this with a lot of optimism. You look at the franchise, the players and the support, and I think there’s something really big to build on.”

Sydney Thunder, led by former Australia opener David Warner, endured a difficult campaign last season, finishing at the bottom of the BBL standings. The squad also includes promising young batter Sam Konstas.

Flintoff said he wants his players to enjoy their cricket while maintaining a strong work ethic and commitment on the field.

“I want them to play with passion and leave everything out there on the field,” he said. “I’m here to do the best job I possibly can for the team and everyone who supports us.”

Flintoff’s coaching career comes after his recovery from a serious car crash in 2022 while filming the BBC television programme Top Gear, which left him with significant facial and rib injuries.
