Indian authorities informed Pakistan that the spillway gates of the Salal Dam would remain open from Wednesday morning until May 30.

Following the announcement, the PDMA warned that water levels in the River Chenab could rise by two to three metres, raising concerns over a sudden surge in water flow at Head Marala Barrage.

High flood alerts have been issued for Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Chiniot districts as a precautionary measure.

The PDMA spokesperson said alerts regarding possible flooding had been sent to all relevant districts and departments after Pakistan’s Irrigation Department received the notification from Indian authorities.

District administrations have been directed to keep control rooms operational round the clock, while Rescue 1122 teams have been placed on high alert to respond to any emergency situation.

PDMA Director General Umar Javed said all concerned departments had been instructed to remain fully prepared in accordance with directions issued by the Punjab chief minister.

He also urged citizens to avoid visiting riverbanks and advised the public to contact the emergency helpline 1129 in case of any emergency.

Authorities have further instructed district administrations to deploy heavy machinery and additional staff and carry out inspections of protective embankments to prevent possible flood damage.
