Cricket’s return to the Olympic Games after 128 years reached a major milestone on Wednesday with the start of construction on the Los Angeles 2028 cricket venue.
International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah and other officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony held at the Fairplex Grounds in Pomona, Los Angeles County.
“Our focus has been on expanding the footprint of cricket, and being part of the Olympic movement brings both pride and ambition,” Shah said.
“The groundbreaking marks an important milestone in cricket’s return to the Olympics and is a proud moment for all ICC members and stakeholders worldwide.”
ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said the event represents a key step in expanding cricket beyond its traditional strongholds.
“The momentum for our game has never been stronger, with strong participation growth across the world,” he said.
The ICC said cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles Games will help inspire more young people to take up the sport and broaden its global fan base, accelerating its international growth.
Cricket at LA28 will feature T20 formats for both men’s and women’s competitions.
