Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for a “transparent” investigation into the killing of nine-year-old Pakistani-Australian girl Hania Ahmed, who was shot during a police operation in Chakwal on June 10.
The child was fatally injured when personnel of Punjab’s Crime Control Department (CCD) opened fire on her family’s vehicle, mistaking it for suspects fleeing a robbery incident.
Her father and brother were also critically wounded, while her mother escaped unharmed during the incident.
Albanese expressed condolences to the family and said the case must be fully investigated so that “everyone can know the truth,” adding that the Australian government stands with the grieving family.
The Australian High Commission confirmed consular support is being provided to the family and extended its condolences.
Punjab CCD officials have described the incident as a tragic mistake during an exchange of fire with armed robbers, saying the department has initiated legal and departmental action against personnel involved.
Authorities have confirmed that officers involved have been taken into custody and charges have been upgraded to murder under Pakistan’s Penal Code as investigations continue.
