South Korea national football team came from behind to defeat Czech Republic national football team 2-1 in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A match on Thursday in Guadalajara.
The Czechs took the lead in the 59th minute when Ladislav Krejci headed home from a long throw. However, South Korea responded strongly and equalised eight minutes later through Hwang In-beom, who finished a well-worked move after a precise pass from Lee Kang-in.
Hwang then turned provider for the winning goal, setting up substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu, who scored shortly after coming off the bench.
South Korean captain Son Heung-min created several chances but was unable to find the net. The Czechs thought they had equalised late through Thomas Soucek, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The victory puts South Korea level on three points with Mexico at the top of Group A. South Korea will face Mexico on June 18, while the Czech Republic take on South Africa in their next match.
